Before reading vande Steeg's book, The Dutch Winter, I couldn't imagine what the Nazi occupation was like for families in an occupied country. Most of the WWII stories I've read start around the time of an arrest and take readers to concentration camps. However, this book is different. It changed me, which is my criteria for a 5-star review. Authentic experience along with research based on the experiences of others who lived one day at a time during that terrible time make vande Steeg's book a compelling read. Living with that kind of fear and not just surviving, but thriving will inspire you to courage

Loved this book. I read it in a little over two day, mostly because I couldn’t put it down. Well written and thoughtful first hand account of the nazi occupation of Holland. Covers the Dutch resistance to that occupation, but also covers one family as they struggle through the takeover and eventual liberation of their home and farm. The last part is a detailed account of the family as they make their way to California and their new home in America. Great read!

What an education this novel is! Yes, it's a novel but the story reads like first hand experience. It begins in 1936 with a young love-struck couple starting out in marriage but are abruptly turned up-side down by Hitler's invasion of Poland which quickly spread to their homeland of Holland. When the uninvited Germans take possession of their family farm, survival became a daily quest for this family now with two sons and another soon to be born. Within its pages we learn of the Dutch resistance and the near starvation conditions experienced throughout the land of quaint windmills and beautiful countryside.

A remarkably insightful book about the stark realities of being a cop, the ultimate price that can be paid, and how both the internal and external politics can put dedicated officers in harm's way. The stories and events told took place in the late 60s, yet jumping ahead to the 2020's, it's easy to see the damage that politics has caused to Law Enforcement. While thoroughly enjoying the stories, it was most interesting to see how law enforcement evolved from the late 60s to today. To Serve & Protect has been kicked to the curb by our elected officials, UNTIL THEY THEMSELVES are in danger. The book is a good read and quite well done!
